A cellular service or cellular network is a communications network in which the last logical link is always wireless. The network is composed of several cell sites or satellite sites, usually served by at least one independent fixed-location transceivers, usually three in number, but most commonly, seven cell sites or main dish receivers. The links are maintained by a series of leased lines, some for downlink and others for link purposes. In a conventional wired system, the same processes keep the connection between the cell site and the outer world even though the connection may be intermittent. Cell phones however are different, since they depend on radio signals that are transmitted through space.

For many years, cellular networks have been used as an important component of personal and business communications. Cellulars allow people to exchange information quickly and reliably and at relatively low cost. Because of this, cellulars have become a significant component of enterprises. Businesses that need to provide fast access to data can do so by using cellular technology. There are three types of cellular technologies currently in use.

The first kind of cellular is a data plan. A data plan uses the wireless internet to transmit the data from the cell phone to the user's computer. This allows the person to surf the internet and send email easily while traveling. The cost of this kind of plan depends on the type of contract, the user has signed.

The second kind of cellular is a Wi-Fi enabled one. This is different from a data plan in that it uses the already existing Wi-Fi signals in the air. Because these signals are free, they allow users to use the Wi-Fi whenever there is available free air time. A laptop can easily connect to a Wi-Fi hot spot. This type of cellular service is becoming more widely used in public areas such as coffee shops and airports.

The third kind of cellular internet connection is the Bluetooth. Bluetooth is also a type of wireless internet connection. It works with the Bluetooth devices that are similar to the cell phones. The signals are transmitted over short distances and usually, the signal strength is not very strong. However, Bluetooth is gaining popularity because it is capable of connecting to a larger number of computers than a wired Wi-Fi connection.

Most people use cellular internet through their laptops. Because most people own laptops, it is convenient for them to use cellular internet when they are on the go. A person who is always on the run would find it hard to carry a wired cell phone just in case of an emergency. With a wireless laptop, a person can still stay connected even if he gets separated from his cell phone.

The fourth type of cellular service is a Data Over Dial Plan (DOP). A Data Over Dial Plan allows a person to purchase minutes of talk time whenever he needs them without using up his cellular data plan's talk time. This is perfect for people who do not use a lot of talk time from their cell phone. The price for this service is cheap and is considered to be more convenient than a cell phone plan. However, DOPs consume more power than a normal wireless internet connection and thus may cause a decrease in battery life.

The five different cellular connections that are available in the market today are CDMA, GSM, WLL, PDC, and TDMA. Each of these has its own advantages and disadvantages. For instance, CDMA offers greater connectivity than the other two. It is not affected by electromagnetic interference (EMI) and therefore is safe to use around children. On the other hand, GSM and WLL do not use any EMI and thus are ideal choices for use in buildings such as hospitals and government buildings.
