These two technologies provided some improvements over the earlier PSTN systems. As it turned out, this competition helped to drive the cost of cell phones down significantly.
The final major development to cell phones was GPS technology. It wasn't long before people started to take their cars with them rather than walking through town. This enabled cell phone makers to make cell phones that were capable of locating a person using their GPS chip. At first, these systems were fairly limited in what they could locate. However, as the years have gone on and newer technology has been developed, cell phones have become capable of pinpointing a person's location. As a result, cell phones have become essential to many modern day businessmen and women.
There are some limitations to cell phones in the 1990s. They do not work overseas and can only be used within the United States. Also, their signal range is fairly short when compared to cell phones today. However, cell phones in the past have been equipped with a feature that allows the call to go to voicemail. Voicemail is an automated message that will be sent to the user's regular cell phone. They still use the regular cell phone to send text messages, and some cell phones do allow users to use their computers to dial numbers.
While cell phones in the past did not have digital camera capabilities, most models in the market today do. Many cell phones also come equipped with video cameras as well. These features make cell phones much more interesting than they were just a few years ago. People can even take full video movies that can be stored on their cell phone.
In terms of applications, cell phones in the 90s mostly provided just telephone calls. They could send text and picture messages, but they were rather basic by comparison to the communication devices of today. Cell phones today offer a variety of options. For example, some models can be used to surf the Internet, use the camera, take pictures and videos, play games, listen to music, and send voice messages or faxes. Some models can even act as a PDA or smart phone.
People have grown to love their cell phones so much that they no longer recognize the humble cell phone as a separate device. Instead, they treat it almost like another handbag or pocket companion. Even kids have taken to carrying their cell phones in their pockets. It seems that cell phones have entered our daily lives as completely as oxygen. We use them for making calls, listening to music, accessing the Internet, and many other tasks, all of which make cell phones a tremendous convenience.
