A GSM phone uses a SIM card and Digital Subscriber Identity Module, which allow you to make calls through your phone service even when it is not in your possession. A UMTS will allow you to make calls through any digital mobile phone service and uses a different frequency than the GSM cell.

Cell-phones using GSM technology allow you to make voice calls inside a building where conventional phones cannot go. Most people are familiar with a GSM cell-phone. These work by using a SIM card that is placed in the device and programmed with a unique identification code. When a call comes to the phone and the SIM card recognizes this code, a predetermined series of radio frequencies is sent and received. The transmitted radio frequencies are then converted into voice channels and converted to a digital sound. These are typically found in handheld devices and portable phones.

With a UMTS system, a cell phone allows you to make calls within a specified area even when the base station is physically present. The digital signal used for voice channels are much stronger than the voice signals produced by a traditional telephone. In addition, a UMTS system can allow a user to receive call notification service without the need of a base station. This can be extremely beneficial in cases where a person needs to contact a friend or family member at any time during the day.

There are limitations to using a UMTS system in some cases. First, a UMTS system typically requires a significant upgrade in the capacity of the signal being used. Also, in cases where the user prefers to be able to send or receive multiple calls at once, the quality of the sound produced may be negatively affected if they are using an analog system that supports voice channels available.

As long as a base station is in operation and able to receive signals from the desired area, there is no limit on how many numbers can be dialed at one time.
