In January, Roberts had announced that under the Xfinity banner, Verizon would offer unlimited nationwide calling for a limited time period, with the following unlimited plans: Freedom Mobile, which feature unlimited talk minutes; Go Mobile which features unlimited data roaming; and Best Mobile, which offer unlimited talk minutes and unlimited data. Also announced was the Boost Mobile prepaid plan, which is marketed exclusively to college students. This plan offers unlimited nationwide calling, text messages, and two free months of mobile minutes after the initial sign-up. Additionally, Boost Mobile will feature an award program that rewards Boost Mobile users who use the cell phone card for a certain amount of money over three years. Other plans from Boost are available, but only at the Boost Mobile store.
During the conference call, Roberts indicated that he had personally come up with the idea for finite cellular, and it was entirely different than what other companies were offering. He claimed that he had been shopping around for a mobile phone contract that would have unlimited calling and data coverage. When he saw that no such contract existed, he realized that there was a need for something like this, in which a customer would get unlimited service, regardless of the carrier.
